How do I use the new navigation sidebar?

Find any page by the part of the work it belongs to, and keep the pages you use most at the top of the sidebar.

Jump to: Overview · Groups · Collapse or expand · Find a page · Favorites · Manage favorites · Recent · Troubleshooting · FAQ

What the new sidebar does

The sidebar on the left of Galley now groups every page under the part of your operation it belongs to, such as Products, Supply Chain or Production. To get somewhere, open a group and pick a page, or type in Find a page and go straight to it.

The sidebar also keeps your own shortcuts at the top. Star the pages you use most to add them to Favorites, and use Recent to go back to where you just were.

You can keep the full panel open with labels, or collapse it to a slim column of icons when you want more room for the page.

The expanded sidebar with Find a page at the top, the Favorites and Recent headings below it, and the Products group open.

The new sidebar appears when your browser window is wider than 1024 pixels, which covers laptops, desktop computers and many tablets held sideways. On narrower screens, such as phones and tablets held upright, Galley shows its compact menu at the top of the screen instead.

How pages are grouped

Home sits at the top of the sidebar on its own. Clicking the Galley logo also takes you there. Every other page lives inside one of the groups below, and some groups contain smaller groups, up to three levels deep.

Group Pages you may find there
Products Recipes (Recipe Catalog, Recipe Book), Collections, Ingredients, Preparations, and Standards (Cooking Methods, Dietary Flags, Food Programs, HACCP Rules)
Demand Planning Menus, Menu Planner, Events, Events Schedule
Supply Chain Inventory, Orders, Invoices, Vendors (All Vendors, Vendor Items, Blanket POs), Credits
Production Production Schedule, Line Check
Revenue Customers, Billing Groups, Billing Items, Invoicing
Insights Reports, Jobs
Account Setup Categories, Locations, Concepts
Admin Company Settings

Pages from early-access features your company has joined, such as Issues under Admin, also appear in these groups.

You only see the pages you have access to. If your role or your company's plan does not include a page, it has no row in the sidebar, and a group with nothing you can open does not appear at all. That is why two people in the same company can see different lists. Your company admin can also hide pages, or show the sidebar as one list without groups. See the sidebar navigation settings article.

Some labels change with what you can access. For example, if you can only see purchase orders, the Orders row reads Purchase Orders instead. Ingredients reads Ingredients & Supplies when your company manages supplies, and Orders reads Transfer Orders if you can only see transfers.

Some pages now have a home in the sidebar for the first time. Dietary Flags is under Products, then Standards, and Company Settings is under Admin.

Collapse or expand the sidebar

The sidebar has two states, and neither one covers the page you are working on.

  • Expanded: a full panel with labels, where groups open in place to show their pages.
  • Collapsed: a slim column of icons, one per group, where each group opens as a small menu beside the column.

The first time you see the new sidebar, it is collapsed. To switch between the two, click the double arrow button at the top of the sidebar. When the panel is open, the button sits to the right of Find a page.

The double arrow button at the top of the sidebar, collapsed (pointing right) and expanded (pointing left, beside Find a page).

Using the collapsed sidebar

  1. Hover over an icon, or click or tap it, to open its menu.
  2. If a row in that menu has an arrow, hover over it or click it to open the next level. For example, Products, then Recipes, then Recipe Catalog.
  3. Click a page to go to it. The menu closes on its own.

The collapsed sidebar with the Products menu open and the Recipes submenu showing Recipe Catalog and Recipe Book.

An icon that leads straight to a page, such as Home, shows the page's name when you hover over it. Click it to go there.

You can also use the keyboard. Press Tab to move to an icon, then press the Right arrow, Down arrow, Enter or Space to move into its menu. Press Escape to close the menu and return to the icon.

Galley remembers whether you left the sidebar collapsed or expanded. This is saved in your browser, so a different computer or browser starts with the sidebar collapsed.

Open groups and find a page

In the expanded sidebar, click a group's name to open it and see its pages. Click it again to close it. A group only opens and closes; it does not take you anywhere itself.

The group that holds the page you are on opens automatically, until you open or close that group yourself. After that, Galley keeps every group the way you left it, including after Collapse all. A closed group that holds the page you are on keeps its name lightly highlighted.

To fold everything at once, click Collapse all, just above Home. When every group is closed, the same control reads Expand all. If you see a sliders icon beside Collapse all, or in the icon column, it opens Customize sidebar.

Search the menu with Find a page

  1. Expand the sidebar.
  2. Click Find a page at the top and start typing part of a page's name, for example "invoic".
  3. The menu narrows to the pages that match. Each result stays under its group, so you can see where it lives.
  4. Click the page you want.

Find a page with "invoic" typed, showing Invoices under Supply Chain and Invoicing under Revenue.

Find a page also searches your Favorites and Recent lists, so a saved view shows up when you type its name.

To clear the search, click the X in the field or press Escape. The search also clears when you collapse the sidebar.

Find a page only searches the sidebar: page names, Favorites and Recent. To search for a recipe, ingredient or order by name, use the command palette (Cmd+K on Mac, Ctrl+K on Windows). See the Galley Command Palette article: https://support.galleysolutions.com/galley-command-palette

Save a page to Favorites

A favorite saves the page with the filters you set. It does not keep the sort order, the page of results or which tab is open. A filtered list is as easy to save as a single recipe.

  1. Open the page you want to save, and set any filters you want to keep.
  2. Click the star at the top left of the page, just to the right of the sidebar.
  3. In Name this favorite, keep the suggested name or type your own.
  4. Click Save, or press Enter.

The star at the top left of a filtered Menus page, with the Name this favorite box open and the Save button visible.

The star turns orange to show the page is saved, and the page appears under Favorites at the top of the sidebar. Click the Favorites heading to show or hide the list. The Favorites and Recent lists start closed each time Galley loads.

When several favorites come from the same page, they are grouped under that page's name. For example, three saved menu views sit together under Menus. Click the group to open it.

Good to know about favorites

  • Favorites are saved to your account, so they follow you to any computer you sign in from.
  • Each company has its own list. If you work in more than one company, switching company shows that company's favorites.
  • If you keep the suggested name, the favorite picks up the page's new name the next time you open it, for example after a recipe is renamed. A name you type yourself stays as you wrote it.
  • If you keep the suggested name when saving a filtered view, Galley adds "(filtered)" after it, so you can tell it apart from the unfiltered page.
  • If you saved a favorite while working in one location, Galley remembers that location. From another location, the favorite shows the location's name beside it, and opening it switches you to that location.
  • You can keep up to 50 favorites in each company.

Save a filtered list. Filter Menus down to what you work on every day, star it, and that exact view is waiting under Favorites each morning.

Rename, reorder or remove favorites

  1. In the expanded sidebar, click the pencil beside the Favorites heading. The Manage favorites window opens.
  2. To rename a favorite, type a new name in its field.
  3. To reorder, drag the handle (the dotted grip) beside a favorite or beside a page's heading. Favorites move within their page's group, and page groups move as a whole.
  4. To remove a favorite, click the trash icon on its row.
  5. To open a favorite in a new browser tab, click the arrow icon on its row.
  6. Click Done to save your names and order.

The Manage favorites window with two page groups, drag handles, name fields, open-in-new-tab and trash icons, and the Cancel and Done buttons.

Removing a favorite takes effect as soon as you click the trash icon, even if you then click Cancel. Cancel only discards name and order changes.

You can also remove a favorite from the page itself. Open the saved page and click the orange star. The favorite is removed right away.

If you prefer the keyboard, select a drag handle and use the Up and Down arrow keys to move it.

Go back to a page you recently opened

Recent, just below Favorites, lists the last five pages you opened, with how long ago you were there (for example, 3m or 2h). Click the Recent heading to show or hide the list, then click a page to go back to it.

A page is added the moment you arrive, so a visit that was cut short still shows up. If you stay on a page for about 30 seconds, Galley also remembers that exact view, such as a filtered list or a single recipe. A page with one remembered view shows that view in its place. A page with several shows how many, and clicking its name lists them (up to five). Hover over a view to see which filters it used.

The Recent list open in the expanded sidebar, with the time since each visit.

Recent is kept in this browser only. It does not follow you to another computer or browser, and each company you work in has its own list.

Favorites and Recent in the collapsed sidebar

When the sidebar is collapsed, Favorites and Recent appear as a star icon and a clock icon at the top of the icon column. Hover over or click either one to open its list. Each icon only appears once there is something in it.

Your favorites and recent pages are also the first things offered when you open the command palette with Cmd+K (Ctrl+K on Windows), before you type anything.

Troubleshooting

What you see What to do
A page I used to open is missing from the sidebar. Type its name in Find a page; it may have moved to a different group. If it still does not appear, it may be hidden from your sidebar, or your role may not include it. A hidden page still opens from Cmd+K or a favorite. Ask your company admin.
The star at the top of the page is greyed out. The page is still loading. Wait a moment and click it again.
I see "You can keep up to 50 favorites. Remove one to add another." You have reached the limit for this company. Remove a favorite you no longer use, then save the new one.
Find a page says "No menu item matches". Check the spelling, or try part of the name. Find a page searches page names, not recipes, ingredients or orders. Use Cmd+K for those.
My Recent list is empty or different on another computer. Recent is stored in each browser separately. Your favorites are the list that follows you.
I see a menu at the top of the screen instead of the sidebar. Your browser window is 1024 pixels wide or narrower. Make the window wider, or turn a tablet sideways if its screen is wide enough.

Frequently asked questions

Where did Dashboard go?

It is now called Home, and it is the first row in the sidebar. Clicking the Galley logo at the top of the sidebar takes you there too.

Do my favorites follow me to other computers?

Yes. Favorites are saved to your account for each company, so they appear on any computer you sign in from. Recent is the one list that stays in a single browser.

Can other people see my favorites?

No. Favorites and Recent are personal to you. Everyone builds their own lists.

Why does a coworker see different pages in their sidebar?

The sidebar only lists the pages each person has access to, based on their role and your company's plan. Two people in the same company can see different groups and pages. Your company admin can also hide pages, or show the sidebar as one list without groups. See the sidebar navigation settings article.

Can I use the new sidebar on my phone?

Not yet. On phones and other narrow screens, Galley shows its compact menu at the top of the screen instead. The star for saving favorites is not available there, but favorites you have already saved are listed when you open search. Recent does not record pages you open on narrow screens.
