7 C's: Canonical & Custom Units
There are two types of units to be aware of in Galley: canonical and custom.
"Canonical" is really just computer-developer speak for standard or universal. Galley's canonical units and the conversions between them (e.g., g to oz) are hard-coded into Galley. They are the units that are present every time you dropdown the unit picker list (e.g. lb, g, ml, cup).
Custom units are unique to your organization's recipes, ingredients, and vendor items (e.g., slice, pie, sprig). Custom units must be manually added to an ingredient or a recipe.
There are multiple places in Galley where you can manually add a custom unit:
- on an ingredient or recipe page in the Custom Units & Conversions section
- while you are adding components to a recipe
- by typing the unit name directly into the unit field of a recipe component
'Each' is a special unit in Galley. It always shows up in the unit picker, but it isn't actually a canonical volume or weight unit. It behaves more like a custom unit. You will notice that canonical volume units are in gold, canonical weight units are in dark teal, and custom and 'each' units are in light green.
It's important to give conversions to custom units and 'each' units, as you see in the screenshot above. We will cover those in the next tutorial. For now, click below for a deeper dive units!
Next up, we learn about the fourth C, Conversions.
