The Types of Cycle Counts
Cycle counts set inventory balances in the system. They serve as resets, aligning theoretical and actual inventory values. While all cycle counts do this, they can be created in three different ways:
Menu-Based Cycle Counts
When you create a menu-based cycle count, all of the vendor items that will be used in the selected menus are added to the resulting cycle count. The workflow is best when you are only interested in taking inventory of the vendor items that you will soon need to use in production, rather than doing a comprehensive count.
Cycle Count Templates
Cycle count templates are pre-defined lists of items that can be used as frameworks for creating new cycle counts. The items (both ingredients and recipes) that are added to cycle count templates can be sorted in a specific order. This order will be set in the cycle counts created from the template, helping achieve sheet-to-shelf inventory. A cycle count template should be used when taking comprehensive cycle counts.
Ad-Hoc Cycle Counts
If you are only interested in counting a handful of items, you can create an ad-hoc cycle count. Your cycle count will begin as blank and you can add items to it one by one. This workflow is best used when you want to correct your inventory levels for one or more items without doing a full cycle count.
Now, let's walk through how to create each of these types of cycle counts.

Taking Cycle Counts
Although there are three ways to create cycle counts, once ready each of the types of cycle count will work the same way.
Now, let's input a cycle count:
